He journied from Hawaiki, across the ocean in his giant Matahourua waka, chasing and slaying a giant octopus, before finally settling in Hokianga. The story is presented on staggered, wrapped panels, 3m above the library area of Kaitaia's new community facility. The comic was created at 1:5 scale using traditional media - ink, nib pens and a brush, then digitally coloured and textured using scanned watercolour textures. Pencil and Inks by Andy Shaw. Some were shot at walking speeds on a Steadicam then sped up in post production. The end 'roundy-roundy' shot involved laser-levels, lengths of string, 2 circular protractors, tape measures and a stills camera loaded with 35mm film. The rally car was jaw droppingly powerful (~800hp). That thing could spit gravel like nothing else. Under the expert guidance of Director Nathan Price we planned out each shot meticulously, resulting in a smooth two days filming. The 3-d version allowed us to prepare thoroughly for the day, including camera positions, camera lens length, and the placement of two 100 ton cranes. One crane suspended a 1000kg telescopic camera crane, the other, a Subaru WRX (with driver!). The final TV spot picked up a Bronze Lion at Cannes International Advertising Festival.
